Final Submission

This is my final submission of the two monuments inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Rem Koolhaas. The environment came out better then expected and i am proud of the amount of work i have put into this experiment. As a concluding remark i would like to say that this experiment throughout the whole process pushed my boundaries in computing softwares and sketching skills, but in saying that, i believe i have overcome most of the problems i faced to produce a final submission that i can say was to the best of my ability. Enjoy !

Exp. 2.5 Textures Added to Monuments

The textures being added to the final monument really gave life to the SketchUp model by enhancing the overall design and giving different features to the already complex forms. Light to dark textures i think were used to emphasise the materiality of the objects and to show the different forms that we have combined to make the final monument. The textures that were used are as shown on the 36 customs textures photo in the earlier post.

Exp. 2.4 36 Custom Textures

The process of coming up with 36 custom textures from light to dark wasn't really clear to me in the beginning, but through the help of the Russell Lowe lecture and showing us previous example of the students textures, i became more confident in the task given to us. Shaowen also guided me through this process by helping me  understand what exactly the textures could be drawn of. The 36 custom textures that i came up with are in the image below, aswell as, the three chosen textures that will be applied to the final concept monuments.

Exp. 2.3 Electroliquid Aggregation

During the Electroliquid Aggregation stage of this design process i found myself being challenged on all new levels through difficult object ideas i had in my head and converting them to paper. This made me think of the different ways the two Architects would "combine" the previous axonometric drawings to make unique monuments. These monuments will later be sketched up in Google SketchUp.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

1. Integrity of form can be de-constructive according to the concept.

2. Form follows ideas through structure and design.

The Electroliquid Aggregation of the two concepts formed a very unique shape to create one of the monuments that would be used in the CryEngine 3 environment.

Rem Koolhaas

1. Exterior shapes relate to interior space.

2. Repetition of patterns forms a concept.

The Electroliquid Aggregation of these forms became a very complicated shape although it is very eye-catching and aesthetically pleasing (in my opinion). It was difficult to combine these two shapes at first but i believe that it shows great intergrity and form as an overall monument.

Exp. 2.2 Models In Crysis

I had a tough time working in Crysis 3 in the beginning, but after a while of playing around with the program i began to understand the concept of the software. The overall landscaping was straightforward, but applying textures and vegetation was a bit more challenging. The video tutorials on Russell Lowe's website helped a lot with any problems i encountered during the exercise.

Exp. 2.1 Axonometric Sketches

1. Integrity of form can be de-constructive according to the concept

2. Form follows ideas through structure and design
3. Simplicity is complexity

4. Exterior shapes relate to interior space
5. Concepts can be de-constructive

6. Space is absent of form

The Two Architects

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 - 1969)
Rem Koolhaas (1944-present)

The outline of the experiment is to choose two architects and draw up some axonometrics using the concepts we come up with in our groups in the first week of the experiment. The prisms that i drew up are reflective of the concepts that we used. The two Architects that were assigned to us were Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 - 1969) and Rem Koolhaas (1944-present). The idea behind chosing these two specific Architects is because one is alive and one has passed away giving us a wider range of ideas and influence in our sketches of monuments.
